Betfair has bought the120 000-strong customer database of Blue Square, an online sportsbook owned by Rank Group for a whopping £5 million. Rank made a decisive move earlier in January this year when they decided to cut their losses on Blue Square to focus on their other brands, such as Mecca and Grosvenor.

All of Blue Square’s former customers have been redirected to Betfair. It is the aim of Betfair to further drive their growth in the sportsbook and other gaming arenas by acquiring Blue Square’s customers. In January 2013, operations had already made head way when Betfair started migrating iPoker, Blue Square’s poker room to Betfair Poker.

A spokesperson from Rank has told us that while this was the end for the Blue Square brand, 888Sports would continue to run and that everything was “business as usual”, well, at least until the end of May 2013.

The Blue Square sportsbook brand has been around since May 1999 and even claimed to be the first online bookie in the UK. The Rank Group acquired the business for £65 million from the Intercapital Group in 2003; however with the decreasing gains over recent years being attributed to the “highly competitive sports betting market in the UK”, Rank has had to re-think their strategy by dropping Blue Square.
